Americans, what would you be willing to give up to save your country?
The federal government is spending more than we can possibly earn or pay back…what would we be willing to forego in order to turn this sinking ship around? Would we be willing to forego social security? Medicare? Medicaid? Healthcare? Government jobs that pay more than civilian jobs? Pensions that bankrupt the very companies that attempt to provide them? Since we are going to lose all of these perks anyway when the nation collapses under the weight of it’s own debt…would we be willing to "voluntarily" start cutting back on what we expect from our government now, before they decide it for us…like many states are having to do now with their budget crisis’s which are forcing them to cut services to the public.
Hard times are coming, which will make the recent recession look like good times…when and how are we going to start cutting back in order to save our nation?
To Krystal…we have never been 107 trillion in debt before, so this is a doomsday situation…each and every American owes 345,000 in debt…and it climbs everyday…just the interest on our debt alone will destroy us…this is as bad as it has ever been or ever will be and it is US who has to fix it.
The present President and his looney co-harts (Reid, Pelosi).

I’d be willing to give up Obama as president.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmIt depends on whom I’m giving it up to. I would give my life and all my money, but not to save Goldman Sachs or AIG.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI’d be willing to give up 95% of the federal government’s function. Their role should go back to one of national defense and just holding the union together. MOST things should be governed at the state and local levels.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI do my best to not use any federal government services, but am still forced to pay for them. I would cheer if they stopped all those programs, I can save for my own retirement.
I have cut back on every monthly expense I could, yet our central government wants us to spend more to stimulate the economy, it’s retarded in the extreme.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmInteresting question. I think a mandated civil service of 2 years would help out a lot. Fire fighter, police officer, military, whatever. Every person must contribute to society for 2 years. More taxes with less spending is the only way to overcome a deficit, but no one wants more taxes, so it will never get paid off.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmCan I give up my entire hi-tech lifestyle and we all go back to village life?
But first, let’s focus on the wealth of the elite at the top, and stop expecting the mass of middle class & poor to cover the lack.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmThe nation has been in a similar position with debt before and we bounced back. It is really pessimistic to think of the dooms day situation. Instead of eradicating certain services that you mentioned, I think it would be more prudent to restructure them (although Congress makes that nearly impossible). I think we should continue to use our most basic rights to vote in leaders that will actually do something instead of simply debating about it all the time for the sake of their own political futures.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI’d be willing to give up the 4.3 billion dollars we send to Israel and Egypt every year in foreign aid. I would also be willing to give up the trillion dollars we are wasting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, I would give up the billions we spend on corporate welfare and farm subsidies. I think members of the armed forces and Congress should not receive retirement until they are 60 years old.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI would never give up the Social Security I paid into my entire life.
Yes, I would be willing to give up a portion of all those things. I am currently on Medicare and fully expect to pay my fair share. People don’t need nearly as much as they think they do. Government waste on nonsense projects is killing us. I know that turtles may be important, but are they important enough to spend a couple million building them a tunnel so they don’t get smacked by a car? Not when we have people out there who can’t get treated by a doctor they aren’t. I suspect that if all the crap were removed from the federal budget, there would probably be enough money left over to cover the medical costs of all those who are currently uninsured. The problem with the government is the fact that they aren’t spending their money. They are spending ours and they do not see a limit on debts because THEY are not the ones who will sacrifice to pay it. That will be left to our kids and grand kids.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI like your first answer. I am in favor of cutting the size and scope of the federal government, first and foremost. I would eliminate the Department of Education and stop all funding of education from the federal government.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmAll funding for mandatory education should come from local sources. When people are able to see how much is being taken from them, changes will be forced on the entire education system.
We don’t need a Department of Energy. The bureaucrats do not create any energy. They just get in the way with endless regulations.
I dont expect any perks from the Feds. I will even give up my social security if they will simply give up what I paid into it.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmSacrafices are going to have to be made. If you paid into medicare and social security all your life you should get it. The fact that government took your savings and spent them is not your fault. It should be paid back to you and end the programs or stop them now and let the ones that paid into it have it.
WELFARE should be stopped. IT should be doled out MONTHYLY by people NEEDING IT and SHOWING PROOF they were looking for a job actively and more than Just TWICE A WEEK! GET OUT THERE EVERYDAY and have proof of THREE TIMES A DAY!
STOP UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS!
Do you know that someone who doesn’t work….they get welfare, food stamps, housing, paid utilities, unemployment, 5000 DOLLARS A YEAR FROM THE IRS FOR UNEARNED INCOME….FREE HEALTH CARE…CHILD CARE …etc…they get an average of almost 40,000 dollars a year?????
WHO NEEDS TO WORK ON THAT????
also GET OUT ALL ILLEGALS..we spend 338 BILLION A YEAR ON THEM!!!!!
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmPentagon. That’s where the biggest chunk goes.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI would direct you to the tenants of the Tea Party movement. Freedom, personal responsibility, limited government and fiscal responsibility. Limit the government to only those essential responsibilities outlined in the Constitution. The rest should be left up to the states. This would mean eliminating the Departments of Education, Agriculture, Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, and possibly Energy. All of these are state responsibilities. If there needs to be some federal ‘coordination’, fine. Make it an office. Eliminate all social programs and entitlements.
The federal government has absolutely no role or responsibility for our personal lives. The federal government needs to focus on issues OUTSIDE the United States, (treaties, defense, international commerce agreements) not within the United States. Again, that’s for the states to do.
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmI’m a commoner hard working taxpayer–I shouldn’t have to give up a damn thing to repair and/or recover from the economic damage America’s political and corporative empowered have caused us over years time and time over.
I expect THEM to give up their shady, white collar criminal deals that allow them to make laws protecting their investment interests FROM OUR HARD WORK. I expect the insanely corrupt / greedy in the banking loan / credit card behemoth industry to back down lower their ballooned repay interest rates. I expect the robber barons of American Big Oil to cease their alliance with OPEC in price gouging our country as they’ve been allowed to do the past 3 years–w/ no near end in sight.
And I expect this facade of a American President, the voting majority all thought would be uber-cool to put in the White House to lead us to get tough with the price gougers that have bullied us to near economic depression levels.
But alas, it does seem evil is looming dominance over our country to watch it burn.
I, and countless multiple millions of fellow Americans ARE VICTIMS of white collar thievery–why should WE be expected to give up anything in exchange for reclaiming America?
March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmAs natural US born citizen I don’t want to give up any of my rights.Best to have the Gov give up there Change idea and follow the Constitution. And what We the people want not what they think we want.

March 7th, 2010 at 7:01 pmthe big money is in defense. to save big bucks back away from wars and reduce the size of the military and of armament stockpiling. give up on the idea of being a super power. we can no longer afford that luxury.
