debt of 900 dolars sent to a collection agency. whats the best way to get them to settle for less.?

besides reporting to the credit reporting company there really isnt much else they can do? its a debt from a doctors office that went to a collection agency.
any suggestions?

    Actually, they CAN sue you and obtain a judgment. They can then use the judgment to garnish bank accounts and/or wages in many states.

    That said, the collection agency probably paid about $0.10 on the dollar for the debt. If you do settle, INSIST on having the deal in WRITING before you pay them anything. You should also contact the doctor first to see if it is possible to settle directly with them.

  2. Feeling Mutual:

    Tell them you are talking to a Bankrutpcy Attorney, pick a name out of the phone book. Tell them you really want to pay it but cannot pay it all, if they will settle for $XX.XX you won’t put them on the bankruptcy. If they call the attorney, you can always say you are talking to several to see who is the best.

    Or dispute the debt with the doctor’s office, they probably grossly over charged you anyway. They can’t collect a disputed debt.
