How is America a greater nation than Australia?
True, America has given the world more in terms of scientific advancements, military protection, etc., but what about day-to-day life? They don’t have job lock because their insurance isn’t tied to employment, they have freedom of speech, assembly and religion…and, yes, you can own a firearm in Australia —-look it up instead of listening to propaganda! They have a high per-capita income also and a reasonable tax rate, no one goes bankrupt over medical problems….so why do so many Americans say that their country is the greatest on Earth when Australia appears to be a pretty great place as well? Some could argue that it’s actually greater.
So, Australia is not the centre of the English-speaking world and they don’t have the bread basket that America has, what good are those two things if you’re not doing well in America? So what if Australia isn’t the centre and doesn’t have a fertile interior….we’re talking about day-to-day life of an Aussie versus a Yank, and from what I am reading, it sounds like the average Aussie has it better these days. Flame away with ignorant comments about the "poverty, fascism, illiteracy, violence and socialism" of this foreign land and how much they suffer and all want to immigrate to America. Australia’s great.
Each country has its own strengths and weaknesses. Both are wonderful democratic countries who value individual freedoms for their people.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmThe United States without a doubt has been the defender of the free world in the many conflicts against totalitarianism that have plagued the world within the past century.
Australia also without a doubt has a much better standard of living for the average person especially when it comes to health care.
In my own humble opinion, they are both among the greatest countries on Earth.
The Europeans who landed here in America took a few of the natives out with muskets. Colonists in Australia herded entire village populations of Aborigines off cliffs.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmGrass is greener syndrome.
Oh yeah, heaven forbid Americans actually have pride in their country.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmIf you are part of the English speaking world the United States is the center of the Universe. It has by far the largest economy of any nation on earth and a higher standard of living than anywhere else.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmUnlike Australia the middle of our country is the bread basket that feeds the world, and not a barren empty desert.
It all depends on the criteria you use to evaluate that. I could cherry pick criteria like you did to make the US look a lot better, but lets stick to yours.
The job problem isn’t from insurance, it’s from the invasion of grossly overpopulating cultures undercutting wages and sucking away whole industries. I suspect Asians are doing the same to you. Ultimately they will drain you down, unless you’ve cut off, or down their immigration like many European countries finally have. Even then I assume desperate illegals flood in anyway.
I bet firearm ownership in Australia is very restricted and you need a permit for most or all arms which is not easy to get. I also suspect you can’t own, or can’t carry handguns or high capacity auto, or semiauto rifles.
I suspect the per-capita income has been dropping as immigrants undercut wages like they have here. How "reasonable" is your tax rate? I bet total taxes are near 50% or more of income as ours are.
We at one time had the highest standard of living but socialism and it’s escalating taxes, desperate overpopulating cultures flooding in undercutting wages, and their cousins sucking away jobs and whole industries fixed that.
I think I’ll stay here for now anyway. I don’t believe you are actually in much better shape.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmNow ted.. We’re all from convict stock down here..

Ok.. I’ve said things that I expect will be said by SOME Americans…
now to really answer your question…..
I’m not about to try and convince the entire USA that my nation is better/greater than theirs … ( gotta keep it to ourselves.. if we convince them otherwise, we’ll have an influx of American Boat people arriving on our shores)….
so all I can say is… that I have no intentions of leaving Australia to live in another nation.. BUT if I had to… It would be to New Zealand …
Seriously though … It’s just a case of each to their own

Libtard ~ "almost everything there is poisonous, or will eat you."
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmWell tis true that we have many poisonous creatures.. BUT you guys have Bears, Wolves, Mountain Lions, Coyotes.. bobcats & Alligators and they all eat you too
Your going to kick a lot of sand into the beer with that question.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmAustralia is a great country no doubt. But what would they be without America? And yes you can own a fire arm,, A bolt action. .. LAMO! I have a a AR-15 with a 20" 1×7 twist heavy sniper barrel with a Tijicon reflex scope on it. You can even have the scope I have in your country! Its banned from being shipped there.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmYou are trying to compare a nation of 25 million people to America who has 320 million people. I’m an American and Australia is one country I would love to visit. No doubt it is a great country. I think we consider America the greatest nation for all the opportunity immigrants have when they come to the states. All the freedoms we have to offer. We are not perfect, but I believe we are a very compassionate nation in spite of what other countries think, we are always the frontrunner of help for countries like Haiti. Truly, people of both nations should be very proud
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmJoe in Texas: No the US does not have the highest standard of living in the English speaking world.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmNa, we are the same. We like Aussies here.
The reasons I don’t move to Australia.
Jellyfish..lots of them
funnelwebs
great whites..lots of them
almost everything there is poisonous, or will eat you.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmI’d just like to correct a couple of earlier answers
A maximum of 30 Aborigines from one tribe were herded over a cliff by one family in one incident that is in dispute. It’s still completely disgusting and shameful though.
The US does not have the world’s highest standard of living, it is ranked 7th (Australia is 2nd).
The US is far bigger (population) and much more powerful militarily and economically.
Most Australians consider the firearms in the US to be a very negative aspect, not the same way as Americans see it.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmamericans think it’s heaven her because they have never been in another country
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pm"so why do so many Americans say that their country is the greatest on Earth"
That’s where you went wrong. You listened to the jerks saying this. I’m American, and I don’t think this is the greatest country on earth. Because it’s not. There are many countries that have contributed great things to the world. Look at all the inventions made by Asians. Look at the Inventions made by Africans. Look at the resources in Africa,. Diamonds are in Africa.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmThe USA has the biggest infant mortality rates in the developed world, the highest proportion of prisoners per head of population in the world and the biggest proportion of unwanted pregnancies there is. Of course they are the greatest! Who could argue with the country that gave the world tastee-lite dubble spray on cheese burgers and ruined the world’s economies with greed and selfishness?
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmStable Government (yes i admit that i don’t like our current PM)
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmGreat Economic Growth
No one Hates us
We have a great Neighbor (NZ)
Hot Chicks
Great Education
We can all afford Higher Education
Small Population
We have only a few corrupt politicians (i’m not naming names)
We have Queensland and americans only have corrupt California.
Our Politicians are not hijacked by Christianity.
Our Head of State is Awesome.
We have Uluru.
Our Military can pwn almost everyone.
And last but not least…..we are a BIG Island.
"no one goes bankrupt over medical problems"
False. Bankruptcies go up with the passage of UHC, they just get classified as financial bankruptcies because people have less money to pay their bills.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmMost Americans are just patriotic and say this. If Australians feel that theirs is the greatest, then good for them too.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmAustralia: not free market, not capitalist
America: capitalist (in name only)
America is better than Australia because we don’t rely on gov’t handouts (or at least, we shouldn’t be, and people are generally against them)
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pmWell, as an American who’s lived in Australia for many years, I perhaps have a bit more insight than Americans who have no personal experience with Australia, and Australians who have no personal experience with America.
One of the things that unite Australian and American populations is their shared ignorance of the outside world. Although they share some far more important and key similarities (both are frontier nations, both are essentially conservative nations, both have similar world views), their common mistake is that they think they know one another. It is clear they do not.
This question is a case in point. Comparing the two in such general and asinine terms is a problematic and ultimately fruitless exercise. It underscores my point about the ignorance prevalent in both nations. The questioner shares a lot in common with others from both America and Australia.
Cheers.
