If you file Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, can you join the military?

After talking to an AF recruiter, they stated that I had to be paid up or on a payment plan with creditors to join. If the debt is mortgage charge offs, if I file chapter 13 bankruptcy and a payment plan is worked out with the creditors, will I be able to join? I ask this because after searching, some state that if you file bankruptcy, it has to be discharged before joining. What is the truth?

Bankruptcy will probably disqualify you from the Air Force but I would recommend calling the recruiter for confirmation. If you’re not stuck on just the Air Force you may want to talk to the Army. We will take you if you have bad credit but the only catch will be that you won’t qualify for a security clearance due to your credit, dropping the amount of jobs you could possibly get from 150 to around 80. Out of the 80 still open to you, what job you get will depend on your ASVAB scores and what is currently available. At the same time, right after you enlist you can send copies of your contract to your creditors and get the interest rate reduced to 6% (if you’re currently paying more).

Of course you can. Military will accept sacrifices of new soldiers anytime.

Most likely not, and if you were able to, then it couldn’t be a top secret job. Being in debt makes you a target for foreign governments/enemies to pay you off!

what ever you do, do NOT file CH13. the rules have changed and you are still going to pay for it. you could find a local credit councilor that will do the exact same thing the CH13 lawyer is going to do without hurting your credit.

make sure the person is local. you want to be able to look them in the eye. they will contact your creditors and lower payments and work out a plan. once you have paid a few payments and it starts hitting your FDIC. then you will be able to watch your credit score rise. unlike a CH13 where you are damaged goods for 7 years.

my husband is army. and filed CH13 before we met. he paid every penny. then he got into an accident and had to ask permission from his lawyer to go buy a new car. they said NO and left him with nothing.

but as long as you are making payments to your creditors then the AF will take you. you could have mounds of debt but as long as you are current in your payments then you will be fine.

Why 13? Are you sure you don’t qualify for a 7? Talk to a bankruptcy attorney – nearly all offer free consultations.
