if your on section 8 and you have unpaid rent can you file bankruptcy?

i have section 8 and i owe back rent i dont have the money to pay it can i file bankruptcy and still keep my voucher?

    i think you might be able, but the thing is, if you do file for bankruptcy then it damages your credit, almost permanently

    Absolutely not. A bankruptcy will not save you from your duties to pay your landlord. Having an eviction would disqualify you from the section 8 program…forever!!!

    Bankruptcy will not free you from a civil obligation which is what your back rent is.

    The Section 8 program may not kick you off the program but they can suspend you for 5 years, and if they find out about the unpaid rent, they will expect you to repay it to stay in the Section 8 program.

    If you file bankruptcy, you will not actually pay the back rent and you probably will be kicked off or suspended from Section 8. Bankruptcy protects you personally but does not take care of the creditor and it stays on your record. You have to check with your county Housing Authority.
