Settling a debt after my wages are garnished?
I had a judgment entered against me in January of this year. I could not pay it, and they would not accept payments from me. Now they began garnishing my wages. If I can somehow scrounge up the money from family members or something, can I still settle it and stop the wage garnishing?

My suggestion is to run down to court and file a motion for installment payments. You can ask the judge to order a payment plan that you can afford, instead of having 25% of your wages taken. In many cases they will do it. You just have to supply some proof of your income and expenses.
As mentioned, the creditor is not likely to settle for a lesser amount, because you forced them to take legal action.
At this point, they will not only be able to recover their balance, but also legal fees and a judgment interest until this is paid off. Everything is in their favor except time.

March 11th, 2010 at 7:16 amYes you can. Wage garnishing only continues until debt is paid in full. The sooner you pay it off, the sooner you will stop having the extra fee you may be charged for garnishing.

Garnishers almost always take payments in full.
Note, it is highly unlikely they will accept "partial" payments or monthly payments because they are already attached to your paycheck.
If you find family members willing to settle your debts for you, congratulations.

March 11th, 2010 at 7:16 amYou can certainly pay the debt of ahead off time. However, it is very unlikely that they would settle for a lesser amount as they "have you" so to speak. If the term is very long they might coniser a slight reduction, it won’t hurt to try it. You should have considered debt settlement before it reached this stage. If you have other debts be aware that they can also become more ganrnishments and so consider a debt settlement program before its too late on those.
