Taxes will only accomplish so much. Tax the rich 100%, and I guarantee the politicians will just fritter it away on cowboy poetry, bombing the third world, or some such nonsense. The money that GM allegedly paid back, did it go into the debt, or the pork barrel?
It seems quite elementary to me, cut spending. Between Bush and Obama the federal government has expanded geometrically. I would post a link, but then the question will never enter the queue.
Maybe it is time we ended some pointless overseas incursions. We are not there to win anyway.
And maybe Grandma can move into the spare bedroom. Because Social Security is bankrupt.
And how about we quit electing politicians by the amount of pork barrel spending they bring home?
Don’t give me that "Bush did it" hogwash. His first day in the Oval Orifice, the nation was already trillion in debt. That 6 billion budget "surplus" was an illusion.

Anyone else check their mail today and discover that Calif. has cut another per month from SSI recipients? How far is this going to go? I am just about to the point of walking out of my home and live in my tent. I already can’t make my payments per month. Is there no relief in sight. In the news yesterday it said if Calif. does not pass a budget within 51 days the state will be bankrupt? How are we who are sick and disabled supposed to live. We give all of our money to the illegal aliens, immigrants and let our own people starve and become homeless!!!
Carol, if I could get out of this wheelchair and off my butt, don’t you think I would love to find some work? Think before you speak. Words do hurt!!

I have a relative ("Lou") who is in debt. Lou is in his early 30’s. The debt is more than K. Lou seems depressed, and I believe spends (restaurants, clothes, etc) as an escape from real life. In the past, the family has repaid Lou’s debt without conditions, but every time more debt appears later. This time, the family offered to refinance the debt only if Lou hews to a budget. Lou is resisting the budget since it imposes controls that any adult might resist. Plus, Lou is worried about his life being in too much flux and not being able to guarantee he can live within the budget. The only alternative is for Lou to default on his debt. We don’t really want that because of the long-term implications of bankruptcy. We also worry about pushing Lou "over the edge". There is no drinking or drug problem. There may be a gambling problem. What do we do? Lou refuses to go to counseling.

I am a single mom of 3 with no financial help. I work full time and have a pt time job to support us and get no other help financially. I have about ,000 in credit card debt. I have not been able to pay consistantly on them in about 6 mos. I want to get the debt paid and am trying to budget to do so. Is it better to try to settle myself or hire an agency to do so?

I had a small business and in 2005 it failed and i had to go bankrupt on it and my home..everything , i lost it all.. I have since gotten back on my feet (i thought) ..got a good job with the state and even bought a new car since i had to drive so much for my job…Aug 1st of this year the governor cut the budget to my program and i lost my job. now I can’t make it…there are no jobs around here, there’s nothing…when is the earliest I can file for some sort of bankruptcy? I took the total wipe out the last time..this time I’m hoping I can do the one where I can restructure and keep my home, car and possessions. The economy is killing people like me. Please I hope someone out there knows if I can file for restructure sooner than 7 years and keep what I finally got built back up. Thank you
i wanted to add that i am NOT an idiot and really hate to be talked to like i am one. I am getting unemployment for now. I live in a very small town in Southern Ill and there are NO jobs…thanks to our goverment all our jobs are going to china or somewhere bedsides here. I ask my question to get a helpful answer NOT to get told I am lazy and need to find work…hate to wish bad on anyone but I just hope those of you who think I am so lazy goes thru this someday themselves..maybe then you will all be more understanding. I didn’t need made fun of ..i just ask for help in finding the right answer…thanks for nothing.
i really think THIS is partly whats wrong with the country anymore…people are heartless..always ready to put someone farther down than they already are…again thanks for nothing.
You know I am rather sorry I asked a question….I am NOT a deadbeat, I am an AMERICAN…if the economy has not hit you yet then I am happy for you…but in small town America it has it hard…I have worked all My life and will continue to work IF i can find a job.. unlike most of you I guess I just can’t afford to pull up stakes and move to ‘where the jobs are’…btw…according to the news they’d like to know where the jobs are too… I am totally ashamed to even read these answers…I hope each and every one of you who have told me ‘to get a job ‘ and not have a new car..or buy a ‘cheap ‘ house….well my answer to that is ..I bought a house..for ,000…cheap enough??? and i bought a chevy colbalt..cheap enough??? so you big knowlegable people get off your pedistal before you FALL off…your not better than me or any other American who is having problems now…I am a 56 year old woman and i live VERY modest life….so dont JUDGE me …all I wanted was some info on what choices.

First off the Dems, progressives or lets just call them what they are the socialist start taxing us next year and do not provide anything for 3 of 4 years. So they can say the bill reduces the deficit.
How stupid do they think people are.
Does anyone think that at the end 15 or 20 years this bill will be budget neural.
Then there is the 500 Billion in cuts to Medicare waste. Really if they could cut that much why have they waited to do it.
Is Obama and the Dems, sorry socialists in congress just liars or stupid?

We have been struggling month to month to make our car payment, which has really high interest since Jan. of 2007. At the time the dealers told us most people just take the high rate and refinance after 6-18 months, well we’ve had the SUV for two years now, and no one will refinance, and my husband is getting out of the military which doesn’t even pay enough, but it pays for your housing, so we are looking at a thousand less a month to stretch our budget. I’m wanting to file for bankruptcy, but my husband is insisting we don’t. Is there another alternative?

I have really good credit. My fiance made some really bad decisions in the past and has terrible credit. (credit cards, overdrawn bank account car loan …..) We are buying a home . We are planning on getting married next year. I am wondering would it be better for him to consolidate his bills and us try to pay them off or should he just file banktruptcy? We plan on doing something before we get married. We dont have any savings and I have a child and he has three from a previous marriage that he pays support for. My concern about debtconsolidation is that we wont be able to make the payments with everything else we are having to take care of. How bad is a debt consolidation or bankruptcy going to look when we do tie the knot if I have really good credit. Also what kind of affect does that have if any on employment?
I am already buying a home so that is not an issue
I am also being told that chapter 7 and chapter 13 affects your credit in the same way and tat both stay on there for ten years
He no longer has credit cards or bank accounts. All of these things on his credit have been on there since before I met him. I asked for financial advice not for someone to make negative comments about bad decisions made in the past. As for having a budget we already live togather and pay all the bills togather We already have a home that we are buying.
We both work. Who doesnt?
