My friend is going bankrupt?

I am a woman in my mid-40’s and my husband had struck gold so were rich. I went touring with the Astors in Egypt but I went on a ship with them to return to America from Europe. Well, on the ship I met a woman called Ruth with a daughter named Rose, and I tried befriending her, but she kept on calling me "new money" behind my back. Well, her daughter was engaged to a man but she didn’t seem to like him much, but in the end the ship hit an iceberg and sank. As we were getting into the lifeboats, Ruth’s daughter ran off, even with Ruth calling after her. I later learned upon the shipnthat saved the survivors that Ruth had forced her daughter into the engagement because they were about to lose all their money, spand Ruth was crying so hard so I sympathised for her. How can I help this poor, poor woman who is about to lose her entire Philidelphian fortune to the debt collectors and who is already grieving the loss of her daughter and is feeling very guilty about it?

Armored Debt Center scam..Does anyone have advice?

I have been a single mom for 9 years. I was using several credit cards for things we needed and actually was doing well making payments until the credit card companies began to increase their interest rates and amounts owed per month. My credit score was perfect. I never missed a payment. I began to be unable to pay what I owed due to increased monthly demands from the credit card companies. I spoke to a representative from Armored Debt Center who convinced me that they would settle my debts for amounts less than I owed, therefore giving me a chance to get out of credit card debt altogether and I agreed to pay 8 per month for them to do so. It seemed like the right thing to do for me and my family’s future. I have put a lot of effort into making that payment every month starting last October. Armored Debt Center told me not to answer calls from my creditors and sent me a script to basically get off the phone without telling them anything. I followed this advice. They tell you to tell the debt collectors that they are only to communicate with you in writing and then you are to fax everything to Armored Debt Center. When the first credit card company took me to court, I followed Armored Debt Center’s instructions to go to a particular website and retrieve documents to fill out. It was a website that anybody could have googled, not affiliated with Armored Debt Center. It was difficult to figure out what I needed to put on the documents that were to be sent to the court. At one point, I called Armored Debt Center and was told that they “cannot give legal advice” so I was left to figure things out on my own. I was told by Armored Debt Center not to worry, that this was part of the process. I filed everything the website suggested with the court. Prior to my court date, I called Armored Debt Center and was told nothing more than, “Don’t sign anything”. Judgement was awarded for the full amount, plus interest, plus court costs to the credit card company. I continued to keep in contact with Armored Debt Center and fax them everything that was sent to me. It would take up to several weeks for them to call me just to state that they received my fax. They have a well-rehearsed spiel that they give on a continued basis stating that “This is a process. Don’t worry. Keep faxing us documents sent to you. Don‘t give any information to debt collectors when they call you. Use your script. No further action is needed at this time.” They led me to believe that they would be settling with the debt collector “after my next payment”. This went on for several months with no settlement. Armored Debt Center did not settle my 44 debt with the very first credit card company that filed, after a full 12 months of payments at 8 per month. I had given them 96 of hard-earned money and they had not settled anything. Every time I would call, I would get the same run-around, rehearsed speech and be coerced into continuing the program. I would explain that other credit card companies were getting ready to take me to court. Now, the court has allowed the debt collector to garnish my wages by 25%. Because Armored Debt Center failed to settle with the first credit card company to take me to court and my wages are being garnished, I no longer have hopes of being able to get myself out of debt because I don’t have any extra money to give to a debt settlement company, or to save on my own, for such a purpose. At this time, my 3 other credit card companies have indeed initiated taking me to court and I have summons for those now.
I spoke to a representative at Armored Debt Center, Mark, about what had happened and that their debt settlement program had failed miserably. I called Armor Debt Center to ask for my money back for a program that had failed. He eventually said that he would give me back my “reserves” which was 38 but they would not refund their “service” fees which were 30. When asked what services they had provided for 30, Mark stated “education”.. Education on a program that did not work, that did not do me any good whatsoever, and in fact got my wages garnished and ruined my credit. My “education” was a script on how to get off the phone with debt collectors and what website to go to to fill out paperwork to send to court that anybody could have accessed. Upon further pleading with Mark, he stated that they would refund 3 to 4 payments. By the end of the conversation, however, he was saying 2 to 3 payments. Therefore, Armored Debt Center was intending to keep 98. I received an e-mail today asking me to sign a form stating that I will accept 32 back from them, which is only 2 payments and indeed would award them 98 for doing nothing that benefited me. I have been so stressed out, I’ve nearly made myself sick. I have heard that there has been a law passed to safeguard people from these debt relief scams. I have not yet had a chance to find out the specifics.

Debt collectors attempting to collect on settled debt?

my bf had debt collectors after him for the balance on his motorcycle.. the motorcycle for whatever reason was financed with 2 loans, but both of which were with GE Money.. my bf settled his debt with GE Money although I’m not sure if it counted towards both loans. GE Money sent him the title to the motorcycle, so does this mean all debt associated with this bike was settled? I ask because now a debt collection law firm is attempting to sue him for the balance of one of the loans associatied with this bike.. can he use the motorcycle title as proof that the debt was settled? I’m just assuming they wouldnt have sent the title to him if everything wasn’t settled… please help, thanks!

oh and by the way, he missed the 30 day window for the debt validation and this company has already mailed him some papers I assume are the starting process of getting a court date/judgement..

What should you do when you come to a settlement agreement with debt collectors?

I have come to an agreement to pay a discounted rate with debt collectors over a bill with an ER visit to the hospital. What is it I need to do to make sure they don’t try to come after me and hurt my credit any more with the balance I didn’t pay?

If two debt agencies merge, is it common to get rebilled for a settled account?

I paid this bill. I heard nothing for over a year and am now getting bills again for it from another company who merged wityh original company. Yes, I called them. they said there is no record. sigh.

So, does that happen a lot?
I am doing this as a POA for someone else, so I have no previous experience with debt collectors.

Prioritizing which debts to settle first?

Hi, I’m 24 years old and I graduated college in 2008. I have student loans totaling approximately ,000. On top of that, I made some bad judgments when it comes to credit and I have the following bills that are in the hands of debt collectors:
- 0 BofA credit card debt from 2005.
- 0 T-Mobile debt from early 2009 (I am disputing this amount – I received an early termination fee after I cancelled my phone contract 2 weeks early because I had absolutely no service in the county I was visiting for 2 months).

I am trying to build my credit score (it is 520 currently) and begin getting out of debt. I earn ,000 in one of the most expensive cities in the country. I have no savings and I currently own no credit cards at all. I’m not really sure how I should start building a healthy credit future.

Should I pay my BofA credit card debt in full? I was told that begining to make payments opens the debt again and it will be on my credit report for an additional 7 years as opposed to being wiped clean by 2012.

What are my best options for beginning to pay off my students loans (they are all government loans)? I am currently paying around /month, should I pay more and forget about my other debts?

What are my best options for beginning to save? Should I just open a traditional savings account or should I look into other options?

How I can I get negative things taken off my credit report? Can I get negative things taken off by the creditor once I settle the debt in full?

Thank you in advance for any help/advice.

Should I file for bankruptcy at 19?

I’m 19 years old and have been evicted (fees thereof are unpaid) and owe money for two different credit cards. My debts reach about 4,000. I am a full time student with barely enough time to work just to support myself, so I really won’t be able to pay off my debts for another 4 or 5 years.

I was thinking about declaring bankruptcy since I have no valuable assets (ie-car is under my fathers name, don’t own a house, etc). Or, would it be better to try and pay it off? How long will these debts stay on my credit report and how long will the debt collectors come after me?

If I just ignore it, will it go away? :)

If I do make payment arrangement can't they try to prolong the debt without settling?

I read somewhere that some debt collectors can accept your monthly payments but also prolong the debt in some way. Is this true?

What will my credit report show if I choose to settle an old credit card account with a debt collector?

I would like to settle a few closed credit accounts that have been charged off and bought out by debt collectors. The collection agency is offering me a discounted rate to pay off this account. If I choose this option, will my credit report eventually show this account closed and paid off, as stated by the agency?

How do I settle my debt which is under 10K?

I am currently in debt. I am 21 years old (Yes I know I am too young to be already in debt). Most of my debt has been passed on to collection agencies. I am slowly paying off my student loans and haven’t done anything about my debt with the debt collectors. One of my other debt with my bank, I was able to hold that off because it was almost sent to the debt collectors, however I am making minimum payment on that card/debt. Any ideas on how I can bring my score back up? How I can clear my debt? Thanks!

Is settling a debt better than paying it off in full?

I know this may sound like a silly question, but when I was in highschool to my early college years I got a few credit cards that have since been charged off. The debt collectors have offered a settlement for of course way less, but I have heard its worse on your credit. Right now I can’t afford to pay off the entire debt so the settlement sounds really good to me. So is it better to take the settlement or pay in full.

How do you settle debt with credit card companies?

I’ve got some debt that’s currently in collections. And I got to talking to one of the debt collectors and he revealed that the average company is willing to settle for about 75% of the debt owed.
But since they’re basically screwing you with outragous interest that never allows you to really pay off the principal debt, are they willing to settle for even less.
What are some useful tricks when dealing with these parasites?
