I am 26 years old and I am in way too much debt. I have tried every other thing that I could. From debt consolidation to just trying to pay back one bill at a time. My last avenue is BANKRUPTCY! I don’t know what else to do. I just want to know how long it stays on your credit report, how does it effect your credit score, and how long until I could start applying for things.

My mother who makes approximately 0 a month has over k in credit card bill debt. She didn’t make the bills alone, but now that people aren’t paying back, she can’t afford to make the monthly payments that range from -5 a month on such a low income. She wants to file bankruptcy, but is unsure of how that will affect her in the years to come. She thought about debt consolidation, however payments monthly for that will range between 0-600 a month. Suggestions? She needs help.

I’m a 29 year old teacher. I’ve accumulated about 00 in credit card debt since I was in college. I cut up my credit cards about three years ago & have been paying on the balances, but card I fell 9 months behind. The minimum payment was over 200 a month and on a teacher’s salary, I just could not make it. They’d send me settlement deals, but I didn’t even have money to settle. I’d send them periodic payments to try to show them I was at least trying. Now, they’ve sent my account to a Debt Collection Agency. The collection agency seems to want me to come up with the entire amount or file bankrupcy. Is there any way I can get a big debt collection company to work with me on small payments until I can get ahead? I recently took a part time job to give me extra income to work with. I don’t want file bankrupcy @ this age and it is the only marr on my credit report. How can I get them to give me repayment options in writing? They want me to do everything over the phone. Help!
The lame teacher’s excuse, is not an excuse. In the state of Montana, a beginning teacher’s salary is barely ,000 a year and with student loans, a rent payment, insurance, etc., at the end of the month I have maybe left over.
Also, I have tried debt consolidation and because I work "-" in the red each month, they would not take me.

I have been told by several people that I had to use settlement money I received to pay my debt consolidation off as soon as possible . Does anyone know if this is true?

I received a call from someone saying I owed a magazine subscription money. I remember dealing with it in 1999. Since then, my file was lost. They said that they have tried to contact me by mail in 2001, but I never received it. I have lived in the same address all this time. Personally, this sounds fishy to me. Is there a way I can get information on this account and others as well. I want to found out if I have any other debt out there floating and take care of them as soon as possible. I’ve been through one bankrupt, and have paid that one off a year earlier then projected. But that was in 2005 when it was paid off. And can I do debt consolidation with a debt under 5k? And if so How would I go about doing it?

Probably cant get a loan to pay them off because of my bad credit? My mom has good credit and might help me out though. Still wouldnt even know where to start.
My cards are in horrible standing. At this point they are all closed accounts. They want their money in full (or a settled amount). I have a better job now and I can afford to pay 250 a month towards this.
Any debt consolidation ideas; loan ideas; debt-relief programs??!?!?!

I am a college student. I graduate this July and I want to start paying off all my debt. I need to know what other options I have besides trying to settle with the collection companies because they ask to either pay it off or they require a big chuck of money then monthly payments and I cant quite do that just yet. Although I do want to pay it off as soon as possible. Would you recommend debt consolidation or do you know of any other options? Only nice answers please.

I have a 1 debt I owe to Directv from 2005. I would like to settle with Directv and pay at least half of not less. My question is would it be in my best interest to speak directly with Directv’s collection dept. or go with the debt consolidation route?

Like most Americans, I’m in debt. I’m a student with a part-time job and I’ve sunk into some pretty nasty debts. I have medical bills to take care of, as well as other other stuff. I’ve read a bit about debt consolidation and lots of sources say it’s pretty much a scam (you’re not eliminating the debt, you’re just moving it). I don’t think bankruptcy is a good idea.
What can a college student (undergrad) do to eliminate 00+ debt? Are there loan programs that just give you money and a few years before you have to start repaying it? Are there other alternatives?
I’ve decreased personal expenses to pretty much nonexistant. I don’t really buy clothes and food and such and all of my expenses are either medical bills, textbooks, or a monthly laptop payment.

I am confused as to what to do – my husband and I recently reconciled and between the two of us, we have ,000 in unsecured credit card debt. Although he makes very good money, approx. 00 per month, we cannot keep up on all the minimum payments for these cards, let alone trying to pay the principal.
He has a car payment and we own our house (or we will in 27 years anyway
– we have not been late on the mortgage as that is our top priority. We also have 4 kids…… should we file? We figure since we have the house and vehicles that we can deal with the bad, bad credit that this will result in but are we forgetting something?
We considered a debt consolidation but we heard this is more often then not a scam and ruins your credit as much as or more then a bankruptcy. Any advice is appreciated ~ thank you.
Unfortunately all the late payments have resulted in a credit rating in the 500’s which is too low to qualify for a re-fi.

Also do you know of any bankruptcy lawyers in the Western PA area?
Basically I went into debt consolidation through a non profit organization. I paid them one monthly payment and they dispersed it to all 3 of my creditors.
They have had problems with American Express accepting a proposal, or accepting a proposal then a month later saying no they wanted more than that. So basically they defaulted my account 2 times for this proposal problems and now they want immediate payment of ,300. I do not have that kind of money. I go to school full time, live it at home, drive a car owned by my mom, and work a part time job.
I have tried compromising with them, but they won’t budge. And my mom won’t bail me out because she feels I need to fix this myself. I know bankruptcy is a major step but I am just trying to look at all of my options.
Also if you know of anyone who has gone through a similar situation with American Express let me know. I would love someone to talk to about this.

There has been considerable debate between two specific debt reducing options: debt consolidation and debt settlement (negotiation). I’m trying to decide which is the best option to select if one wants to reduce their financial debt (specifically credit card debt). I’m sure there’s pros and cons to both options, however which is more effective? Please advise.

A ‘For-Profit’ COmpany based in Texas, helping people with financial debt consolidation. I’ve heard, that its a great alternative to filing bankruptcy. Looking to manage/consolidate debt, and NOT have to file for bankruptcy–which can ruin my credit
Thanks Jeanne R. I guess you’re my only answer…

I have really good credit. My fiance made some really bad decisions in the past and has terrible credit. (credit cards, overdrawn bank account car loan …..) We are buying a home . We are planning on getting married next year. I am wondering would it be better for him to consolidate his bills and us try to pay them off or should he just file banktruptcy? We plan on doing something before we get married. We dont have any savings and I have a child and he has three from a previous marriage that he pays support for. My concern about debtconsolidation is that we wont be able to make the payments with everything else we are having to take care of. How bad is a debt consolidation or bankruptcy going to look when we do tie the knot if I have really good credit. Also what kind of affect does that have if any on employment?
I am already buying a home so that is not an issue
I am also being told that chapter 7 and chapter 13 affects your credit in the same way and tat both stay on there for ten years
He no longer has credit cards or bank accounts. All of these things on his credit have been on there since before I met him. I asked for financial advice not for someone to make negative comments about bad decisions made in the past. As for having a budget we already live togather and pay all the bills togather We already have a home that we are buying.
We both work. Who doesnt?

I cannot do debt consolidation. I would rather not declare bankruptcy. A dishonest ex-husband dumped his debts on me when he shocked me by divorcing me two years ago after 14 years of marriage. This was in TEXAS.

We are about 00.00 in debt with alliance one and i think 0.00 in capitol one. We have a debt consolidation with Federated Financial. But I was thinking that maybe we should just settle with both of the debts ourselves because federated financial charges .00 a month and it will take us like 3 years to pay it off, if we go through them. What is the best choice?
