Can someone file for bankruptcy with no debt?

I have a friend that is trying to find ways to fix her credit score. She has no debt (credit cards, car, etc.), just monthly rent and utilities. She has some blemishes on her credit score from a repossesion and some other things, but no more debt. She brought up the idea that she was going to file for bankruptcy to clear her credit and start over again. Is this possible? Can someone file for bankruptcy when they don’t hav any debt? Will it really help her credit?

Question about bankruptcy or debt consolidation?

EX-wife left me with a ton of debt (credit cards, loans, etc.) and although i have a well paying job, i don’t think that I will have enough to support myself, my kids and a child support payment. My question is, would it better for me to declare bankruptcy or try to consolidate my debts and pay it off. ( i don’t like oweing anybody money) And if i file for bankruptcy, how much will this cost? Are there personel consultants to look over my debt and decide… Also my credit is horrible as i spent all my money paying for a divorce… Any answers would be apreciated.

Can you settle credit card debt for less than owed? Even if not behind on payments?

OK, few questions. If someone has say, 25k in debt – credit cards, the like – is it really possible to call the companies and negotiate a settlement for less than owed? And #2, how does this reflect on the credit report?

My brother in law is telling me that he is inheriting about 30 thousand bucks soon, and will be calling his creditors (credit card debt only) and negotiating with them, telling them that he has to file for bankruptcy and offer them less than owed. He SAYS he can negotiate and get them to about .30 cent on the dollar.

Is this correct? And how does it appear on the credit report? I don’t believe him. He says that he wants to keep as much cash as possible to open a business in a year or so. I say he will regret it because of the marks on his report. Who is right?

What is the best way to pay off credit card debt?

I’ve heard of companies like cureadebt.com that will settle your credit card debts for 70% of the amount owed. I’ve also heard of government grants to pay unsecured debt(credit cards), but I don’t know where to get the info on them. I’m considering a second mortgage to pay these off with a lower interest rate. Thoughts?

We no longer use credit cards, so the balance only increases because of high interest rates.

Will I have to appear in court when I file bankruptcy?

I want to file for bankruptcy on my own without a lawyer. Besides filling out paperwork, do I need to appear in court? I see no other way than filing bankruptcy to get out of debt. Credit counseling is not helping and I want to start fresh. I have learned my lesson.
