Can I claim myself on my taxes?

My mom filed bankruptcy last year and she just can’t afford to help me. I am 20 yrs i will claim about 16-17k on my tax return from doing landscapeing this year. I pay for school, rent(8months where i go to school and i give my mom about 250 a month in the summer), car insurance, truck, and really everything except i’m on my mom’s health insurance(teacher). Can i claim myself? and how would it hurt my mom not being able file me as a dependent, and how much would it help me as far as paying taxes on my business and paying for school? Thanks

Question about purchasing catastrophic health care insurance?

I’m a generally healthy 44 y/o male whose lousy employer doesn’t even offer a buy-in health insurance plan. Since I don’t want to go bankrupt if something should befall me, 1. Should I purchase catastrophic health care insurance, and 2. How do I find a reliable provider that isn’t too expensive? Thanks.
I’m in California, if that makes any difference.

Since I won't be able to retire at 65 as planned due to republican cuts in Medicare, should I just go?

ahead and file bankruptcy now, keep what money I have and make myself a ward of the state?

Republican plans to force us to buy private health insurance at 65 instead of going on Medicare changes everything.

How do I pay my 0.00 premiums as I do now in retirementment?

Oh well. Maybe they will give back the money I already paid in all these years.

Do Canadians think U.S. healthcare reform was warranted?

According to this article,
http://financiallyfit.yahoo.com/finance/article-110806-6784-1-five-quick-ways-to-bankrupt-yourself?ywaad=ad0035&nc

Reason #2 for bankruptcy in USA is unanticipated medical bills due to illness.

Here’s what the excerpt says on the link:

2. Assuming Insurance Will Cover Your Medical Bills

So, maybe you budget. You make an allowance for food, clothes, beer.

But do you have an allowance for medical costs?

Here’s why you should: The No. 1 cause of bankruptcy is medical bills.

Harvard researchers found that 62 percent of all bankruptcies are caused by medical bills. Even more disturbing: 78 percent of those were people who had insurance.

"Things happen. Surprises happen," Kothari said. "And people don’t prepare for the unexpected. They don’t have a mindset of, ‘How do I prepare myself for the unexpected?’"

Of course, the best medicine is to not get sick.
….

So doesn’t this indicate a serious problem when 78% of people with medical insurance STILL go bankrupt from getting ill? And the amount of out of pocket cost of health insurance has no upper limit?

Do Canadians think this indicates correctly that U.S. healthcare reform by Obama was a step in the right direction?
whoops I didn’t read the statistic correctly.

Among the 62% of Americans whose reason for going bankrupt is due to medical bills, 78% of those are people who had health insurance!
I think we don’t have to do exactly what Canada did under Tommy Douglass, but we should have a Maximum liability that a patient can possibly owe for an illness and start from there….
you can’t budget when you have an unlimited liability for sickness…It’s discouraging because if you are a coal miner, your medical liability may exceed the total of all income earned over your entire life
Now some Americans respond to this by saying "It doesn’t matter how many go bankrupt, doing something to fix this is called ’socialism’, punishing successful corporations to reward people who weren’t successful at budgeting themselves."

But if 78% of 62% of Americans who are bankrupt HAVE insurance! Then isn’t it the system that’s screwed up? Not the result of people being stupid with their money?

Is it time to go for good?

I have been married for awhile now but I wouldn’t say that I was happy. My wife constantly takes everything out on me. I find myself being more happy when she is away. I just got out of the hospital, while she was out of town, and rather than spend a night with my wonderful family…I get attitude about how I need to find a better job and she is sick of being the one to carry benefits. Could I do better…probably. However, with the job situation today…my job is 100% secure and I do make about 45K a year. So, not the poor house either.

If I leave her, I will be without health insurance since my company is too small to provide me with such and I have a chronic health condition. It would also probably mean bankruptcy due to the house. We also have a small child that loves it when we are together. My religion and views that I have held so strongly would dictate that I could not remarry without being outcast from my family and friends that I have known for over 20 years. My wife says she wants more of a physical relationship but it is hard for me to want to be physical with her when she puts me down so often. My wife plays the "good wife" when needed but a few times she has slipped up and said something with my family in the next room. They have asked me about it and I have assured them that it was an isolated event but it wasn’t.

I strong part of me doesn’t want to go but I don’t know if any alternative is better.

I am wasting my life and how do I pick myself up by my bootstraps?

I’m not sure what’s wrong with me. I did go to psychiatrists when I had a job with health insurance and they did not help. I’m at the point now that I would like to kill myself, but I’m a coward. I’m not looking for people to say "oh, don’t do that" — I’m mentioning that to give you an idea of how I have no hope and no desire to live. I isolate myself literally in my home. I’m in horrible debt now. I have no friends, no partner, no children and I’m almost 50.

I CANNOT afford to see a doctor, so please don’t suggest that. And the state will not help a single white person with no children, so please don’t suggest that. Even if I found a free clinic, I probably wouldn’t go because I have this problem about isolating myself in my house, fear of going out. And I’ve looked for free group therapy in my town and I haven’t found any. I even tried to get other depressed people to come to a group therapy via Craigslist. No one responded. If you suggest church, I probably won’t go because I have a problem with *isolating* myself.

Believe it or not, I wasn’t always like this, although I feel I’ve always had problems with depression. I was a flight attendant for 15 years. I’ve gained tons of weight, I will eventually have to file bankruptcy, if I can ever make myself go to the attorney and file and have the money to file. I just want to disappear when my cat dies.

Is there anyone out there that deals with this kind of thing and can suggest ANYTHING to help me just make the first move to helping myself?

Thanks in advance.

Why is it republicans think Universal Health care is wrong?

http://blogs.forbes.com/rickungar/2011/01/17/congress-passes-socialized-medicine-and-mandates-health-insurance-in-1798/

Besides the fact that their only argument seems to be "im to greedy to allow any of my money to be taxed to help a less fortunate person afford to LIVE". there doesn’t seem to be any other reason beyond GREED, Selfishness, Hatred of anyone who needs help financially, and GREED.
Here’s an article about how even the FOUNDING FATHERs know that socialized health-care was the only ETHICAL and moral choice out there:

So Republicans? Why do you hate the idea of every one having health-care? Why do you hate the idea of having to help the less fortunate? Aren’t republicans all big about being Christian? yet you hate the poor…

I want to know DO YOU HAVE ANY REASON beyond greed and ignorance that free market health care ONLY benefits the super wealthy, for opposing socialized/universal health care?

Id be willing to bet you don’t. Save your breath if your going to rant about how wrong it is you should part with your money to help some one NOT have to go bankrupt to pay a medical bill…or how all the poor MUST be lazy and should just die…i have already heard those "arguments’…anything new?

PS: Obviously i am biased infavor of universal healthcare, but i REALLY am Curious, if Republicans have any reason beyond GREED, and blind faith inunlimited free market FAILED economics, to deny (make perpetually unaffordable)health care to millions of americans??? I have never heard an argument not based on "how dare others expect me to help others"
Try reading the LINK if nothing ealse, though i realize READING is a bit too difficult for some of the people who oppose universal health care…

Since the republicans hate the healthcare bill, what do they propose, letting the poor die or go bankrupt?

Because there is NO other option. If you are against the health care bill, then you are a Social Darwinist Nazi, who hates the poor and is stupid enough to think they are all lazy, deserve to be poor, die, and are "inferior" to blue blood rich people. Plain and simple. Republican economics have been proven failures. Laissez Faire economics hurt all except the rich, and so does trickle down economics. Make a bill that allows Competition? I got news for you, the insurance companies are so big they can manipulate the market.

So if the republicans hate this bill, which i fell did not go FAR enough, does that mean they think people who cant afford health care don’t deserve it? Or that they deserve to lose their homes in order to get medical care? Hoe cold hearted and unchristian can you get? (aren’t repubs supposed to be christian and help others? guess not)

So please enlighten me, if you are against the health care bill do you feel that people who cant afford it shouldn’t get it, or should be sent into debt so high it makes living no longer worth it?

How sad; the US appears to have voted "we hate the poor let them die…by putting in the repubs" IMO.
what kind of a MORON doesnt want to buy health insurance. That you cant afford it makes sense, that you dont want it means your an idion, and i doubt mostsane people dont WANT insurance
yeah the best health care ONLY 1% of the population can afofrd, i dont consider that something to brag about .
@ coldfuse: There is no persuading republicans, they dont have the brain power of compassion to see the need and feasability for universal health care…

ridicule and condescention? The republicans do it all the time. Thats politics.

Should I file for bankruptcy?

First and foremost I want to say thank you for all answers I recieve. This is obvisously not an easy time in life and all answers are carefully read, as I hope that you take into consideration all that my situation entails.

When I was 19 I set out to get myself a great credit score, something both of my parents could never do. And I did, I went through my credit report took off somthing that my dad had put in my name as a kid and got my first credit card, making on time payments and just having a balance of on the 0 limit. Well, then I, after my dad moved and other bad things happened in life (theres a long story there) I kept getting more and more cards I think trying to distract myself from my situation at the time. So I eventually realized that crap I was in a lot debt (00) which on my Starbucks paycheck of 0 bi weekly and rent in Detroit and car repairs, I was already making minumium payments so I moved to Charlotte NC to stay with my mother and pay this off. I got into debt counseling (which I feel was a mistake) I reduced all my payments from 0+ a month to 200. Well now I live in TN where the taxes and cost of living is lower. I sold my piece of crap car for a whooping 0 after it broke down and my gf and I have been sharing her car for the last 4 months and the budern as been great on us both.

Now I find myself so stressed. I let my dad use my eBay account after he lost his job so he could start making money to help himself live, but he sold stuff he didnt really have and now my paypal accoutn is at -00 and he hasnt paid on our cell phone plan (which is under my name) going for a total of new debt thanks to my dad (this is all dad related) to 00.

Well My credit card debt hasnt moved too much. And heres roughly where I lay now:

-00 in credit cards being paid off through credit counselling
-00 in medical bills I havent even touched (oh and I dont have health insurance either I took another job that promised more money but turned out I dont get medical for another 6 months)
-00 because of my dad and my sere stupidity
-00 in student loans (which I know cant go away with bankruptcy)

————–
Total = 800

I make 12000 a year and I cant just get another job because I dont have a car and my gf and I share one. I never thought I would consider this move but Ive tried for years now to do it the honest and hard working way and its gotten me nothing.

If you have a question go to my profile and click email me! Thanks!
I know that filing that would mean I couldnt get a car loan and some places wouldnt hire me but trust me that doesnt seem like a bad sacrifice even though Ch 7 would be on my record for 10 years. And once again thank you!

How would a "national health care" system work without going bankrupt?

What are the projections for such a system? What contributions would all recipients of health insurance be required to make? How would costs be controlled without rationing?

Any information would be helpful. thanks.

How has linking health insurance to employment had an impact on ordinary Americans?

I mean besides worrying that if the company you work for goes bankrupt there goes your health insurance and the COBRA extension; Also, wouldn’t it be amazing if you could work the job you *want* rather than the one that offers the best benefits. Why do we still have this system as it limits self employment, small business growth and creates "job lock"? Ever tried buying insurance independently outside of an office pool with two pre-existing conditions? Even if you cut back on absolutely everything, it’s still unaffordable.

Cities, Counties are going broke…why not cut more Police to save money?

In my state (like most) crime as declined in almost every category and certainly my local area as well.

When I drive the 6 miles to work everyday I see (5) layers of police driving around…just in my area and that includes at least 2 taking radar to make sure no one goes over 25 mph…thank God!
We have State Police, County Sheriffs, Twp Police, City Police and even a local College force lurking around.

We have all read the countless articles how these near bankrupt institutions are and are responding by writing "We the People" a record number of traffic citation (in the name of safety of course <cough>).

My point, instead of running around "busting" the bad guys (those who go 31 mph in a 25 mph zone)
why not do as the private sector does and lay them off Thessaly saving us who pay all the bills and work in the private sector.

I mean some of the county level "workers" make 80k-100k a year, I would imagine the state cruisers make more if not the same not included on the benefits we are paying for, pension, health insurance and the rest.

Just seems like such a waste of our money
SM, good point but unemployment benifits are better than a full salary. Also, they could find jobs in a less-taxing field in the private sector.
Hank, I don’t presume it…it’s a fact, let me know if you require more links
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2010-05-24/news/os-crime-stats-orlando-20100524_1_violent-crime-preliminary-fbi-fbi-statistics
Warren, in Congress we are only talking 435 member and only a 100 Senators.

No, Police don’t stop crime they react to the crimes. I would assume many would claim they prevent crimes such as speeding by setting up radar traps etc., but that really helps no one (only hurts people) I think we can live with a few radar traps to fix this massive budget shortfalls.

Think outside the predetermined box!
Silver: Yeah and the bombs "could" drop tomorrow, or the sky "could" fall etc, the point is we have wayyyy to many law enforcement…sure we can justify any amount using your logic…if that works why don’t we just triple the forces now…why, because it doesn’t work.

Locally, we are far better off reducing Police levels by 23%-40%…I’m sure none of us would even notice.

Most people don’t have contact with Police, in 46 years I haven’t had one contact with a cop in any way….they are just not needed in these current numbers

Trying to settle a DEBT!?

I’ve had about 6 accounts go into collections. They are all hospital bills. I thought at the time my insurance covered the majority of those visits seeing how I had coverage but I guess they didnt. My credit has been severely ruined b/c of these accounts dispute the fact I have a mortgage, auto loans & credit cards all in good standing. I want to settle the collections accounts but I’m curious on the repercutions of settling. The oldest account is from 2002 & the newest one being in 04/2006. They are relatively small totaling only about 00. What recommendations do you guys have? I really dont feel I should pay something my health insurance should have paid. But I want to fix this since I’ve ignored it for so long. I’m clueless when it comes to this stuff! Please Help!!

Do you agree or disagree about this statement on the U.S. economy?

America is a country based on debt, your debt the national debt its all the same! You cant control your own silly spending but when politicians do it you feign surprise? You were not surprised when the new highway was paved or when supplies came in after the disaster. You were not surprised when the local bums collected their food stamps and WIC, or even when the SSI wagon came around for all of the illegitimate kids "payments". But now, after all these years, because we’re at the edge of financial collapse you act like the last guy with the pocketbook caused the problem.

Hilarious, mixed with a crap ton of irony I think.

Also, how can someone honestly look you in the eyes and with a straight face tell you health care needs to be passed and needs to be passed now? We pass it, we go bankrupt and guess what? No health care for anyone at all.

Anyone with a rational, logical mind would focus on the economy, get people working again. Then focus on such things such as health care.

If you disagree, please tell me why!
Your health insurance industry adds about .500 dollars to the price of every car made in USA over the cost of a car made in a country with socialized health insurance.

That’s the unions, maybe the 28 dollar an hour auto worker needs a pay cut. Ever think about that O_o

If you had no Health Insurance how long would it take you to go bankrupt if you incurred $100,000 in med debt?

That’s why I think everyone should have health insurance..I work at a hospital and believe me, we all pay when people don’t have insurance!

If you have no other choice and need to file bankruptcy, which is better chapter 7 or chapter 13?

After trying to find ways to be able to take care of our responsibilities we have come to the last resort and that is to file bankruptcy. We don’t own any homes or any real property. what I am curious about is which is better chapter 7 or chapter 13. We want to be able to start saving a soon as it done and when feesible start rebuilding credit. Our credit card debt is only 00 which is a lot, but it could be worse. We just had two bad years with this one being the worse. I am looking for advice on the best way to go between the two. Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 and why.

We are not happy about doing this as we have tried everything. We don’t have anything of value and we have tried to pawn stuff but couldn’t get .00 for most. We live very modestly. So please do not answer this question if you are going to be negative.

Thank you so much. We want to do the right thing so we can start over and never have to do this again.
Thank you so much for all that has given advice so far. I guess I need to add just a few details to make the situation clearer.

As I stated it has been a bad 2 years, actually almost 3 years. I got real sick and had to leave my job and am now on disability. My husband took on a second job a year ago. He pays child support. Between the two of us we have 5 kids between the ages of 9-16. We have two vehicles, which one is in the shop. We also are surrendering this vehicle.
We have an attorney and he is recommending chapter 13. I (we) have a lot of medical bills. After I had to leave my job I couldn’t afford the cobra payments for continued health insurance. To maintain health insurance with my husbands employment (state worker) would have cost more than the cobra payments.
My ex- husband filed bankruptcy and I did not know that anything he had when we were together, came back to me.
I never thought I would get sick and have to quit work. I was not prepared.

Your thoughts on reforming the US Healthcare system?

Seeing as to how Obamacare is heavily debated and let’s be honest the GOP haven’t put a viable alternative so what are your thoughts on some reform

What should be the main goal of health reform in the US, should it Decrease the cost of health care, Improve the quality of health care, Improve the access to health care or make most Americans receive at least basic free public care. What would it be like for the US if an Australian system like the Medicare service is implemented where all taxpayers pay a 1.5% income tax levy (with exceptions for low-income earners), an additional levy of 1% is imposed on high-income earners without private health insurance. There is also a private health system where people pay for health insurance to go to a private hospital if they wish for quicker service. Bankruptcies from lack of funds to pay for medical bills is the largest reason for personal bankruptcies in the US accounting for over 60 % of all bankruptcies, while in Australia it is almost negligible.

Check out these videos for some information:

http://www.newscientist.com/articlevideo/dn17512/30590602001-the-scientific-arguments-for-us-healthcare-reform.html

So what do you guys think?

If the US pays more for healthcare then all other industrialized nations, but gets worse results…?

then what’s the problem with starting up a gov’t funded alternative?

1.) People argue of dooms day scenarios regarding waiting lists to get teeth pulled, but never take into account all of the people who wait until the last minute to get medical treatment b/c they have no health insurance. THESE PEOPLE WHO WAIT ARE DRIVING UP THE COSTS of healthcare b/c by seeking no preventative care, they increase the amount of expensive surgeries and extended stays at hospitals. As it stands, Americans are already paying for that now.

2.) The people that state that the US can’t afford gov’t funded healthcare due to sky high taxes overlook the fact that healthcare costs are the leading cause of bankruptcy today among people that HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE.

3.) The people that state that if the gov’t provides healthcare, it will eventually have within it’s ability control to manage every aspect of our lives have obviously never heard of the military, CIA, FBI, NSA, Homeland Security, Federal Reserve, Treasury and Coast Guard, which at any point can control every aspect of our lives today.

What’s wrong with a gov’t funded alternative?

What is the Main Objection to the Public Option in Healthcare Plan?

Surely it’s not the idea of government offerring a reasonably priced and fairly administered health insurance contract?

We have seen how corporate America works. From the big banks, to the big credit card companies and mortgage lenders, right. You don’t pay these guys at least million per year, they wouldn’t even consider showing up for work. Most of them wind up getting Million or million when all parts of their pay and compensation and pension and healthcare and expense account are figured in.

So the idea that corporate America is ludicrously greedy and rapacious is not news to anybody who has actually been on planet Earth for the past 10 years, right.

Now comes government, and says it wants a non-greedy, and non rapacious healtg insurance company. It wants to set one up. It wants a chance to compete with the insanely greedy private companies, maybe offer a better product, or make them offer better products by giving them some honest competion.

Well, if that’s all there were to the offer, only a real Chicago School Purist would object.

So, what’s the big objection to the Public Option?

Here it is.

Imagine a company that wanted to sell flood insurance. OK so they sell most of their policies in the floodplain areas of the USA.

In order to attract customers they say "We will pay off on these policies even if you buy them after your house has been completely washed away and destroyed utterly by a flood."

Well, of course they sell a lot of policies, particularly after big floods. Everybody whose house has been destroyed buys a policy for ,000 and then puts in their claim for their destroyed house for 0,000.

Miracle of miracles this company soon finds itself in big financial trouble. Why?

Because ,000 is a much smaller number than 0,000.

Now come the company executives, and they say, "How were we to know that our business model was faulty?"

We went to Princeton, Harvard, and Yale, we studied speechmaking, and community organizing, and political theory. We have never seen the inside of any business, met any payroll, done any cost accounting, kept any books, or developed any business models.

How were we to know?

Is this really similar to a health insurance company that agrees to insure all persons regardless of pre-existing conditions.

Imagine that the person is like the house.

Imagine that the pre-existing condition, perhaps glioma of the brain, is the house already having gotten washed away in the flood last week.

Imagine that the premium is ,000 per year.

Imagine that the operation for the glioma costs 0,000.

Now, the rule of arithmetic that we visited earlier
is still true, ,000 is a smaller number than 0,000.

Who could possibly imagine that such a health insurance company would run into financial trouble, and quite quickly, and quite deeply?

No one in government. They went to Princeton, Harvard and Yale, you know the drill.

The problem is this: The bad flood insurance company only hurts itself, it’s policyholders, its employees and it shareholders. It winds up in bankrupcy Court and gets eliminated, within about 6 months.

But the bad (crazy) U.S. Government backed health insurance company, can’t go bankrupt. It has the full faith and credit of the Federal government behind it, who can print money, or take the bad debt onto the Fed Balance sheet.

So this becomes the money black hole. It’s like a cash whirlpool. The money disappears down it, and never comes back, and it gets bigger and hungrier every day, every hour.

The rathole down which USA disappeared.

So — the problem is all about the fact that the government has a completely crazy business model for how a health insurance company can operate — and it’s not their fault — what do they know from insurance? Zilch — they are community organizers!

So this is an idea in which everybody is a victim, even the ones coming forward with the idea now, they are victims too ”How were they to know?"

What are your thoughts on Obama’s plan for health insurance?

Are you jumping on the band-wagon with the idea that health insurance be mandatory for all legal US citizens and if you cannot afford to pay for it yourself…the US tax payers will? Well, heck…why don’t we all just go file for bankruptcy then! From the sounds of it, if you make less than K a year…you qualify.
Good thought Zanz…I agree…none the less he is the president.
