I am 26,000 in credit card debt. My life turned around completely last year and I lost many things in my life, family, job, etc. I am not making enough on my job to pay the basics and have been using up all may savings. Now I have no savings left and am short 600 month just for basics and providing for my daughter although she doesn’t live with me. She lives with my mom who is living on ss. I need to file chapter 7 but can’t afford the fees and am not smart enough with paper work to do it myself (I’m terrible with directions). I can scrape together money for the useless credit counseling stuff (so they can figure out how I can pay 1800 bills on 700 income, lol) if I don’t buy groceries for a couple weeks but I have no way of getting 500 dollars. My employer cuts hours every week and it’s that way on all retail jobs. I can’t just get a better job and even with that, i would only have the money I need for the basics. My small tax refund will only be 30 dollars.
If I was able to get a second job (not easy with no transportation and if I work after dark, I have to take a taxi (I spend 20 dollars a week now on taxi rides when I get off at night as my neighborhood is very dangerous and I can’t move). If I can find extra work hours, it will just keep me from being homeless a couple months longer, it will not cover bankruptcy costs. I have no resources, family and friends have no money to help. Is there anywhere in Houston where I can find free legal help (not just a consultation but actual filing assistance without cost?) If I have to pay the fees, I will not be able to pay rent. At the rate I am going, I will be homeless as of July 1st providing I don’t lose my job or have any more hours cut.
They are only a week late but I am already getting calls all day during the week. No one leaves a message on my machine so I presume it’s one of my creditors. I need to file bankruptcy because if I don’t they will sue me and freeze my bank account which only contains my pay deposits which are only 700 but if they take that, I can’t pay my rent. I have nothing to sell as I lost everything I owned last year when my family through me out. They gave away and sold all my stuff. I have a 50 tv and a40 boombox that doesn’t work and a 2year old computer that runs slow.

I just purchased a 2006 Jeep Liberty. Everything seemed to be working in well, but i forgot to check the cd player. Now whenever i try to insert one, it says "CD ERROR". Why does it do this? And how can i fix it without going bankrupt? lol

I understand there are tons of companies out there who offer debt settlement programs. Some sound alright, others have been extremely annoying – after the only thing I really wanted was a consultation and some help understanding the program to begin with, they would not leave me alone!!! (Must work off commission). Anyway, I thought about negotiating with my credit card companies on my own, and one agreed (almost) to a 50% reduction. Sorry this is getting so long, but anyway!!!… How the heck do I pay that lump sum at once? When negotiating on your own, can you also request that discounted balance to be payable over a certain amount of months? Or should I just go ahead with a debt settlement company so I can make payments over 2 or 3 years? If I had a huge 00 cash wad (like needed for the debt reduced 50%, which is only 2 of my 5 cards) then I probably wouldn’t have such a financial problem. lol But I don’t have that kind of money all at once up front..so any suggestions!?

I’ve recently been contemplating filing for Bankruptcy (Ch. 7) because I am in so much debt it hurts my brain to even think about it!! I am currently over k in debt. Most of the accumulated debt I owe is from past bills I ran behind on due to some unnecessary circumstances. Right now I am attending school full time and working part time making a measly 20/month as my take home pay. With my salary I pay for all the usual bills: rent, utilities, wsg, car insurance, car note, and use whatever I have left over to pay down my debt. For the past year and a half I haven’t opened any new credit accounts and I’ve been on a tight budget. I take full responsibility for all of the finanical debt I put myself into but am stressed and afraid that some of the creditors I owe will soon take legal action (as some have stated in their threatning letters). I’ve attempted to set up payment plans and have tried to negotiate a reasonable payment plan with my creditors but even with some agreeing to this others are not as willing. I am just seeking some advice because my credit is already horrible and even if I decide to paydown my debt it will take well over 5 years relinquish. I figured if I file for Chapter 7 it will stay on my credit just as long as if I tried to paydown all my debt on my own.
Big T: THank you very much for the advice and the many suggestions. I have been trying to stay optimistic about the whole ordeal and I have to give it up to you because I understand first hand how hard juggling work and going to school full time can be. I understand my debt is nothing compared to others but it is still a debt I have to take care of. I appreciate the encouragement and will look into other wage earning opportunities and try other ways to cut back!
Barnaby J: Thank you, I didn’t really factor in my wage earnings after college because they are still unbeknowest to me. (maybe if I looked into a crystal ball I’d know for sure..lol) But, since you have mentioned it I am predicting my salary wages will increase quite significantly after college which will help me drastically in cutting my debt!! However, I am not trying to rely entirely on those predictions! Thank you!!

Ok, first off I don’t know if this is a Conservative or a Liberal idea, but I did vote for McCain and Palin and think that they would make a better team to lead the country then Obama and Biden. Many in my family and I have to include my inlaws and YES!! even my own husband (he’s still the love of my life) think that sometimes my cognitive processes (thinking to those of you who haven’t mastered "BIG" words lol is on the eccentric side. For example, I thought (and still believe this idea) that when California was having the wildfires it should have let them burn out on their own and simply rescue any people in the way of the fires. People then should have been relocated out of California to live in such safer environments as Kansas (where there are few fires) etc. Anyway this is Rebecca thinking out of the box again. The government should simply print up a lot of money and use it to pay off all the bonds. After this, California would have plenty of money left to balance its budget and pay for schools, roads, and maybe even cut taxes. If the Federal Government refuses to print extra money to pay off the bonds (after all the money is only paper lol lol) then an alternative would be to simply default on the bonds issued by California and declare bankruptcy. So what do all of you think? Oh, in the interest of full disclosure, my mind is searching for something to keep busy since I said goodbye to my favorite man on Wednesday and he’s on his way back to Iraq after spending a wonderful two and half weeks at home on Leave. I think he left me with a little bundle of joy that just started growing inside of me and will eventually be an addition to our growing family.
