Should I file bankruptcy, settle, or keep ignoring my creditors?

I have an old Citi card, Capital One card, Best Buy, Chase, and then a few smaller ones- Wal Mart, Express, and Lane Bryant. I haven’t made a payment on most of them in at least 2 years. I stopped paying them cold turkey because they jacked the interest way up and wouldn’t negotiate with me, and I couldn’t afford to pay them along with tuition, rent, etc. since I didn’t receive help from my family. I’m not even sure what I owe, but with all the fees I’d estimate I owe a total of ,000-,000 spread out on them all. Without the fees it would have been half of that. In addition, I have ,000 in student loans. I’m not making much money right now at all. For now I’ve just been focusing on paying my student loans in the hopes of rebuilding my credit. I don’t see how I could afford paying off my credit cards. What should I do about them? I’m not getting many calls anymore, but lately someone is calling threatening to sue me for 00 credit card. They have threatened to sue me before (Citi Bank) and even sent me a summons of court letter, but never followed through. What is my best option? For now I plan to keep ignoring them but I am sick of this problem. Help!
Thanks roscoedeadbeat. All my credit cards are already in collections, and they have been for about 2 1/2 years. I also had a 2nd Citi and 2nd Chase card but paid them off as a settlement years ago with some student loan money… Now, the problem is, I don’t feel like I really can afford to pay them. I’m already having a hard time paying my student loans- right now I have to pay 0/month and soon I will start paying my private loans which will be around 0/month for a total of 0. I feel so overwhelmed! :( Maybe I’ll talk to them and ask what is the lowest they can settle for, and then see if my family can help me at all, but I hate to ask them for help. Thanks for your answer though.
Thank you for the answers Sgt Big Red and carl.bennet. I looked up the statute of limits in my state (MN) and it is 6 years… so I am about halfway through. I might end up making more money in the future, but I don’t see it happening for a while. I plan to go back to school within the next year (either part-time or full-time if I get a graduate assistantship), and that will take me at least 2 more years. So maybe I will continue to wait it out. I don’t want to deferr my student loans right now because I want to save deferrment for a later time in case I’m in a worse situation then- such as if I have a baby or get sick. And I can only defer my federal student loans, I can’t defer the state loans. It’s so hard- I wish I had been smarter about debt, but I guess you live and learn. I appreciate your answers.
Oh one more thing- this is a bit desparate, but if I moved out of state to where they have a lower statute of limits, would the new statute of limits apply to me? Or would it be the same statute of limits since it originated in MN? Thanks!

How to settle with a debt collector?

I owe around ,000 in 3 student loans. I was paying on them each month until I filed for bankruptcy in 2009. My Lawyer said since they were private loans they would go in the bankruptcy. They didn’t and I couldn’t afford the back payments on them after the bankruptcy. Now I have a company saying I have to pay ,000 now to pay for back interest and I can pay 0 a month. I do not have a savings and I do not have even ,000 let alone ,000 and they are not willing to work with me. What do I do?

PRIVATE LOAN NIGHTMARE! How to settle the debt?

Please please please someone help!! I have had a really rocky time with undergrad (in and out) and have yet to finish. I owe over 100k in private loans because of my personal obstacles. Now it looks like I have my act together, and I am finally on the road to finishing my degree, but I am on my last year of in school deferment for my JP Morgan/Chase private loan. Right after getting my degree, I’ll be on my way to medical school. I already work full time and barely can pay the monthly minimums on 3 loans already in repayment, and after this year, my other 4 are up for repayment as well. I can’t consolidate because they are private and our economy sucks so much that no company is willing to take on private loan consolidation of 100k total.

IS THERE ANY OPTION to extending in school deferment? I have read from some places that you have up to 60 months, which is just 5 years. What about continuing on to grad/medical school?? Is there a way to extend in school deferment?

Lastly – I know you can cancel/forgiveness on federal loans….is there such a thing for private loans??

I HATE PRIVATE LOANS! Please help – I have no other solutions…I’m financially on my own and do not have any support from anyone. I made a bad decision, and all I want to do is become a great doctor. This is looking impossible with this debt. Once my 7 loans all come into repayment, I will be unable to pay monthly minimums. Even if I do forebearance, I will still be unable to pay the lowered monthly fee on 7 of my loans, considering I will be in medical school. Please help!!!

Should I declare bankruptcy?

I have had two financial advisers tell me to declare bankruptcy when I graduate from college, or sooner to eliminate my credit card and school loan debt, and one telling me that I should probably get more financial aid (all from different firms)…. The interest rates on private loans for schools are ridiculous (I am going through Sallie Mae), and I am already freaking out about how much I am going to have to pay back…

I don’t really have any family, and I am currently in my Junior year in college. I have been working full time, and paying my school on my credit cards, apartment etc etc.. (I have 3 with a total of 00 credit line, and they are usually maxed out when new semesters start). I get a little bit of money from the federal government (FAFSA) for school, but it obviously is not enough… I also have a bit of private loans from my grand mother who is co-signing for them.

So should I declare? When if I should?

I am not trying to skeeze my way out of it, and I am fine with paying it all back with the career I get when I graduate, but I am really scared about the whole thing (private loans), and I would like to know if there is an ALTERNATIVE route without having to sell my first born child. The gov. and my full time job do not provide enough income for school and such, and I can only work so much taking an average of 18 credit hours a semester.

If I declare bankruptcy, will it affect my grandmother since she is co-signing?

Please help me out. I am open to all constructive help and legitimate ideas that don’t involve anything illegal.

If I can't pay just one bill will I have to go bankrupt?

A lot of bills, unemployed, it’s too much now
I had to put a lot of my college tuition on credit cards because I expected I would find a job after (graduated 08)

Bank of America after that new law was passed for banks and/or creditors to increase their rates
my monthly payment went from 150$ to 300$
I have 1,000$/mo. in bills and only make 600$/mo from unemployment
I’m wondering if I can kind of selectively go bankrupt on this
I figure if I just don’t pay that I’ll only be at a negative 100/mo
I live out of my car and don’t eat much so gas/food is pretty low.
Only I usually had to put them on a credit card. A different card.
Not paying this one bill will probably cut off my other cards too?
I have really good credit and I was hoping to hold on until I could find something but I can’t and once i find a job I’ll have another 500$ in student loans.
I either need a good paying job or 2 or 3 regular ones but I have to acquire them at the exact same time because of that student loans. Right now I can hold up some of it with unemployment deferment
not sallie mae, you can’t defer private loans for any reason
I’ve already sold most of my things. It doesn’t hold up too long

I just want to stop paying bank of america
How bad will it be?
